Since more than ten years, the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche (LOV) is involved in science-based outreach, which has become one of its key missions.
Accompanied by the Culture Océan team of the Institut de la Mer de Villefranche (IMEV), the LOV staff shares its current research in oceanography with all those interested.
Children and adults can thus develop a better understanding of the ocean and associated issues in a context of environmental changes.
By using numerous means of science outreach and communication, by relying on ongoing projects, actions and events, the LOV addresses various audiences at local, national and international level.
In this context, both digital and in-person approaches have their place. Educational programs such as « adopt a float », or « The Ocean Collection – Frontiers for Young Minds » are thus designed to contribute to the Ocean Literacy movement and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

As part of the Year of the Ocean, the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche is actively participating in two major events: the One Ocean Science Congress and l’UNOC’3.
Our unit’s staff will take part in scientific discussions and associated events, and will also contribute to the “Sciences-sur-Mer” Festival (June 7–13, Villefranche-sur-Mer), which aims to strengthen the link between science and society by offering opportunities for dialogue between stakeholders and inviting both the general public and school groups to take part.
